(Full time, fully remote)
About the role
Czepeku makes handcrafted maps, scenes, tokens, and creator tools for tabletop RPGs, loved by a community of hundreds of thousands of GMs and players. Every piece of art we ship is made by human hands – and the website, tools, and subscription experience around that art deserve the same care.
We started as a Patreon run by our founders, Cze and Peku, which grew to be the #1 Patreon at one point. As Czepeku grew, so did the team, and now we have several artists working on every single project we produce. We have been recognized for our work with an ENNIE Award for Best Cartography (Gold) and a CRIT Award for Best Map Designer, and our maps have been called the ‘the gold standard for battlemaps’ by Matt Colville. Recently, we’ve launched new projects like our czepeku.com subscriptions as well as Bastions & Guildhalls, our Kickstarter which was successfully funded last autumn.
We have more ideas we’re working on, and we're looking for an experienced freelance product designer to join our small, friendly, fully remote, indie team to help us make those projects a reality. You'd work alongside our current product designer and web development team, sharing ownership of everything from our map-building tools to our subscription experience.
You've shipped real products, and you're at home working directly with engineers. You’re comfortable writing and fleshing out tickets with clear information, capturing design decisions, and owning delivery – we don't have a dedicated PM, so the whole team shares responsibility for getting work out the door. You should ideally have a passion or strong appreciation for tabletop RPGs.
What you'll work on
There are always new projects and initiatives on the go, as well as a backlog of ongoing foundational work that we are continuing to finesse. Depending on our current priorities, you'll take ownership across:
- Our creator tools – tools such as our 'Architect' Map Builder and Token Builder, and there’s much more soon to come. Think: world-building tools, saved creation management, live/multiplayer gameplay experiences, and the ability for our users to customize every tiny detail.
- Showcasing the art with smooth, polished, immersive UI – you have a real taste for interaction and craft, with a very high bar for quality, and can apply this to everything from the map-building tools and subscription experience to release emails and landing pages. (We have a brilliant graphic designer who owns our marketing visuals and branding; your role is about the interactions and systems around them.)
- The shop & subscription experience – pricing pages, checkout, upgrade flows, account dashboards, subscription tiers, special offers.
- Navigation and search – we have many ways of browsing our enormous body of work (check out our Vistas!), but we have lots of ideas for improving browsing and discoverability. We want to help our community find (or create!) the specific item they need among tens of thousands of pieces of art.
- Integrations – our platform integrates with VTTs and platforms such as Foundry, Alchemy and Discord, and uses third party tools to handle some features. You will get stuck into the fiddly details of how these platforms function, and how to best integrate them into our product in a user-friendly, intuitive way that still ‘feels’ like Czepeku.
- Our design system – helping manage and improve our Figma component library so that it’s easy to quickly iterate on ideas, whilst also being a powerful resource to superpower our incredible dev team.
What you'll actually do
- Own product areas end-to-end: from rough wireframe to polished Figma or clickable prototypes, working directly with our developers.
- Join our weekly Design Sync – the heartbeat of design & development at Czepeku, where decisions get made – and work async the rest of the time through Figma, video walkthroughs, Linear, and Discord.
- Gather your own evidence: watch session replays, dig into data, hang out where our community talks and pay attention to their feedback, and run scrappy usability tests when a design needs it.
- Sweat the details, because we do.
